vice-presidential candidate, is wowing
them on the campaign trail as the
presidential race moves into high gear.
But inside the Democratic party,
Lieberman is causing some angst
because of his decision to run for
reelection in Connecticut even as he
vies for the vice presidency.
The problem? If the Gore-
Lieberman ticker wins in November,
the lawmaker would have to give up
his Senate seat, and his replacement
would be appointed by that state's
Republican governor.
If Lieberman pulls out of the race
now, Democratic officials say, state
Attorney General Richard Blumenthal
— a Democrat — would be favored
to win the race for his sear.
Lieberman can wait until Oct. 27
to withdraw, but Democratic officials
worry that the longer he waits, the
harder it will be for Blumenthal to
win.
The reason Democrats are so con-
cerned: they continue to hope they
can wrest control of the Senate from
the Republicans. But if they do, it will
be by the slimmest of margins, and a
switch to the Republican column in
Connecticut could dash their hopes.
Speaking on NBC's Meet the Press
this week, Sen. Robert Torricelli (D-
N.J.), chair of the Democratic
Senatorial Campaign Committee, said
that the prospect of a Democratic
majority in the Senate means that "Joe
Lieberman has to make a personal
decision. It's a difficult decision; I'm
glad I don't have to make it."
Also on the Lieberman front: This
week the Democrats announced that
Michael Lewan, a top political con-
sultant and fund-raiser, would be join-
ing the Lieberman entourage as a kind
of high-level personal aide.
Lieberman, whose nomination con-
tinues to produce ecstasy among
Jewish leaders, doesn't need help
attracting Jewish voters and contribu-
tors. But if he did, Lewan would be
just the guy to turn to.
Washington insiders say Lewan —
once a top aide to former Rep.
Stephen Solarz, later Lieberman's chief
of staff — has some of the best Jewish
contacts in American politics, especial-
ly among New York's powerful
Orthodox community.
For years, Lewan was a primary
contact for Orthodox groups that
needed favors on Capitol Hill; he is
also considered a champion fund-rais-
er who knows how to open Jewish •
wallets.
And Lewan himself is not even
Jewish. ❑
