O

ne of Leonard Baruch's first initia-
tives since becoming executive secre-
tary in January at Clover Hill Park
Cemetery in Birmingham has been to
emphasize the concept of visiting depart-
ed loved ones prior to the High Holidays.
While this was once a common prac-
tice, Baruch says participation has dwin-
dled. That's why "Time and
Remembrance," a special
memorial service and pro-
gram hosted by the ceme-
tery and Congregation
Shaarey Zedek was
designed, to revitalize visi-
tation to Jewish cemeteries.
"We are offering
the particular moment Leonard Baruch
in time before the
High Holidays for an especially mean-
ingful service," Baruch says.
Rabbi Joseph Krakoff and Cantor
Ralph Goren of Shaarey Zedek will
lead the program, which begins at 2
p.m. Sunday. Sept. 10, in the chapel at
Clover Hill Park Cemetery. •
Following a very brief memorial serv-
ice, including responsive readings and
recitation of the Kaddish (prayer for the
dead, glorifying God's name), a short
program will review the prayers and tra-
ditions of visiting a Jewish gravesite.
"We're trying to get people today to
get used to the concept of going to the
cemetery," Baruch says. "We are doing it
because certain processes and traditions
about going to the cemetery have been
forgotten. We want to make people better
equipped to visit the cemetery, and we are
trying to make it convenient for them."
Everyone present will receive an
individual prayer booklet for future
use. Following the program, those
gathered will proceed to visit individ-
ual gravesites to say a special prayer
and place a small stone on the grave.
"We're not just opening the ceme-
tery," Baruch says. "We're trying to get
people to understand this is a different
entry for beginning to talk about the
High Holidays.
"We want to create an understand-
ing of the Jewish cemetery and the tra-
ditions involved there."
