or it does not.
To James Besser, Carl Levin, David
Hermelin and other prominent Jewish
Democrats who have attacked the
"religious right" very publicly, would
you please explain why that which is
appropriate for Jewish left-of-center
Democrats is not appropriate for non-
Jewish right-of-center Republicans?
Those of us who wanted to convict
President Bill Clinton are considered
"religious fanatics" (although I am unaf-
filiated and highly secular, that does not
matter to those making the charge). Yet
those who wanted to acquit [Clinton]
are benighted because they criticized his
behavior from a "moral high ground"
(e.g., Lieberman).
And, let me add that the compari-
son of Henry Payne's writings to those
of [Der Sturmer newspaper publisher]
Julius Streicher is one of the worst
slanders that your newspaper has ever
published. I realize that you are quot-
ing another individual, but this type
of extremist rhetoric is exactly what
we as Jews should oppose. If disagree-
ments over politics occur, my answer
is, "Welcome to America . . . thank-
fully, we are one people with diverse
views." If, however, we are going to
use the Holocaust as a sword of
Damocles to attack our differences
with a cartoonist or with anybody
else, then we fall victim to the exact
type of behavior that vicious anti-
semites accuse us of.

Find Other Views

My conclusions are threefold:
1. The Jewish News needs to be
more objective in its news coverage,
seeking out those with different opin-
ions; in other words, a choice, not an
echo. In your "Other Views" (Sept. 2)
reporting on Lieberman's Aug. 27 visit
to Detroit, not one view unfavorable
to him was published. I am not the
Jewish community's only right-of-cen-
ter individual. Others are more elo-
quent and cogent than I, and they are
not hiding under rocks.
2. Liberals in our community need
to end their pattern of attacking the
Christian right for its religious
involvement in politics, while praising
the Jewish (and black) left for their
involvement in politics.
3. Lieberman and his running
mate's choices on targeted tax cuts;
permitting partial birth abortions (I
am pro-choice, but am not in favor of
crushing fetuses in the ninth month of
gestation); increasing government

power; ignoring national defense;
denying the loss of presidential charac-
ter and honor over the last eight years,
along with other significant issues,

Messrs. Bush and Cheney And, by the
way, Cheney's probity, national

defense experience and competence to
me make him a far superior vice presi-
dential choice to Joseph Lieberman. E

No Basis To Deny
Kosher Status

After reading "Kosher Losses" (Aug. 4,
page 7), I find no basis for denying
Dexter-Davison Meat Market in Oak
Park a kosher certification.
Sherry Gilman, the owner, has done
a phenomenal job in enhancing the
store by upgrading the presentation of
the meats and chickens and by immacu-
lately maintaining a clean environment.
It was stated in the article, "She was
told by the Vaad to purchase pre-kash-
ered and pre-packaged meat from Corn-
belt Packing Co." Why? I, and many
others, do not prefer pre-packed meats.
I want to see what I'm purchasing. As
always, I prefer fresh meats.
The article stated that the Vaad
Harabonim (Council of Orthodox Rab-
bis of Greater Detroit) made "simple
requests about her level of Jewish obser-
vance." What were those requests?
Sherry has improved the store. I feel
the Vaad's requests (whatever they are)
are unfounded.
When there are so few kosher butch-
ers today, the Vaad should try to main-
tain and promote the existence of
kosher butchers for those who want to
buy kosher meats. Give her a chance.
