Spiritual EKG
Thoughtful and warm, Tisdale says of

hospitals take care of the patient's
body, we take care of their soul.
People will often tell chaplains what
they can't tell their family or doctor."
Ten years ago, patient Lynn
Johnston became angry with God
and abandoned Judaism because of
her father's awful death. Miller taught
her it was "OK to be upset with God.
But it's also important to know that
God was crying with you."
With Miller's guidance, Johnston
has found peace in lighting and saying
the blessing over the Shabbat candles
at the hospital. "Anger and some
pain," she says, "have actually gone."
The CPE program also provides
the opportunity for interfaith dia-
logue, which is unique in the country,
says Father Carl Buxo, head of the
program. The seven other participants
included Episcopalians, Lutherans, an
ordained Salvation Army minister
and Roman Catholic seminarians.
Working at Beaumont was signifi-
cant in another way for the Jewish
interns. Since the sale of Sinai
Hospital in Detroit, many Jews now
come to Beaumont.
"It's very meaningful to me that the
Jewish Fund, which is the money
from the 1996 sale of Sinai, is being
used for programs to train future rab-
bis for pastoral care," Miller says.
In turn, the interns have taught the
hospital staff how to accommodate
their program to Jewish patients.
Whether a patient is Jewish or
not, Miller sees himself as a "conduit
for prayer."
"I'm called everything from doctor,
chaplain, father, rabbi and doc," he
says fondly of his patients. "But it's
most meaningful when I'm called
Jason, knowing I've brought comfort
and hope to people at their most
uncomfortable time."
