Washington/JTA — The FBI is taking
several steps to combat the globaliza-
tion of terrorism, FBI Director Louis
Freeh told B'nai B'rith International's
convention.
The FBI has established offices
within American embassies around the
world to serve as liaisons with host
countries, developed rapid-reaction-
teams that can immediately be sent
overseas in the event of an attack,
focused on disrupting terrorist fund-
raising efforts and run training pro-
grams for FBI personnel and their for-
eign counterparts, Freeh said Monday.

Jerusalem, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud
Barak said, but he reiterated that no

An adviser to Palestinian Authority

full Palestinian sovereignty over all reli-
gious sites, there would not be peace.

Gore-Lieberman
Office Vandalized

Los Angeles/JTA — The Gore-
Lieberman office in Chico, Calif,
north of Sacramento, was vandalized
with antisemitic graffiti.
Bob Ray, president of the

Democratic Action Club, told the
Associated Press that he arrived at the
office and found "No Jew in the White
House" written across two large, erasa-
ble boards and a planning calendar.

Gene Found That
Affects Ashkenazim

Jerusalem/JTA — Israeli scientists have
located the gene responsible for a
genetic disease more prevalent among
Ashkenazi Jews that causes mental and
motor deficiencies, including blindness,
muteness and the inability to walk.
One out of every 100 Ashkenazi
Jews carries mucolipidosis, and more
than 80 percent of people afflicted with
the disease worldwide are Ashkenazi
Jews. Both parents must be carriers in
order for the disease to be passed on.

Lieberman Tries
To Mend Family

Washington/JTA — Democratic vice
presidential candidate Joseph Lieberman,
acting as executor of an uncle's S48 mil-
lion estate, is taking steps to reinstate two
children who had been cut out of the
will because they married non-Jews.
Lieberman is handling the estate of
Bernard Manger, who died after a fall
in 1995.
Lieberman's role, a spokeswoman
said, is "to try to help bring the family
back together."

Reconstructionist
Building Grows

New York/JTA — Twenty-five percent
of the Reconstructionist movement's
congregations have just completed, are
in the middle of or are now launching
capital campaigns for buildings.
The movement is Judaism's smallest
and newest stream, and most of its
100 congregations do not have their
own buildings.

No Sainthood
For Pope?

Rome/JTA — An umbrella Jewish
group dealing with Jewish-Catholic
relations told the Vatican that Pope
Pius IX doesn't deserve to be a saint.
The protest came in a letter from
Seymour Reich, chairman of the
International Jewish Committee for
Interreligious Consultations.

Pius IX, who became infamous for
ordering the 1858 kidnapping of
Edgardo Mortara, a Jewish boy who
had been forcibly baptized as a baby, is
slated to be beatified next month, the

Congregants Revive
Stricken Rabbi

Cleveland/JTA — Congregants at an
Orthodox synagogue in Cleveland saved
their rabbi's life during Shabbat services
last week by giving mouth-to-mouth
resuscitation and pumping his chest.
According to the Cleveland Jewish
News, Rabbi Yisroel Grumer, 74, col-
lapsed after Shabbat morning services
and was quickly taken to the hospital
where he will have bypass surgery. The

Iran 10 Verdict
Stirs Iranian Anxiety

Teheren/JTA
Iranian President
Mohamad Khatami met with dozens
of leaders and members of Iran's Jewish
community in a move described in
Iran as an effort to soothe communal
anxiety in the wake of the July 1 con-
viction of 10 Jews accused of spying.
U.S. Jewish observers, however,
view Khatami's actions last week as a
public relations maneuver in the run-
up to his September visit to the United
Nations. A ruling on the appeal of the
Jews' case is expected Sept. 5, a day
before the kickoff of the U.N. summit
that Khatami is slated to attend.

Jewish Groups Earn
Energy Star Awards

Hartford/JTA — A Conservative syna-
gogue in Connecticut and a group of
Jews who biked across the United States
this summer to raise awareness for envi-
ronmentalism were recognized with the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's
Energy Star Awards.
The synagogue, Beth El Keser Israel,
installed timers so that lights and heat-
ing are only used when needed on
Shabbat and recently upgraded its
lighting, windows and air conditioning
to make them more energy-efficient. In
addition to these Jewish groups, 28
small businesses and religious groups
around the country received awards for
energy-saving efforts.
