"In the broadest sense
-- it was like the
Democratic convention replayed
for us live, right in our own back
yard. He was particularly effective
in his ability to tie in his wife's
parents' experience as [Holocaust]
survivors with the special, moral
obligation that we as Americans
have to the generation who liberat-
ed the concentration camps. They
should not have to decide between
drugs and food."

Former
Jewish Community
Council President
Jeannie Weiner:
"I just feel so intensely

contrary to the American ideal ... The
United States is made up of many dif-
ferent types of people from different
backgrounds and different faiths —
including individuals who do not
believe in God — and none of our cit-
izens should be made to feel outside
the electoral or political process."
The ADL sent a similar letter to each
of the eight candidates seeking nomina-
tions for president last December.
Church members at Fellowship
Chapel were impressed with the speech'
they heard, praising Lieberman's virtue
and religious beliefs.
"He's a man of God; he's sincere,"
said Robert E. Moore of Southfield.
"It's our duty to help whoever wants to
strive for the same things we believe in:
justice and fairness. When I walk up
that ladder, I'm reaching down to help
other folks up, too."
Charles Coleman of Detroit said,
"He's a man of principle. Orthodox
Jews stand by a certain principle that
they won't shake." ❑

proud that the person
who was brought on
board this ticket to be
the exemplar of morality and
excellence happens also to be a
Jew. I kept thinking think about
my father, who was born in
Hungary, and would have been
thrilled and amazed to see that
this day finally arrived. I think
that Lieberman is a strong can-
didate and a good person and
the fact that he is also Jewish —
because I am Jewish — makes
me feel intensely proud."

Rikki Chomsky, 14, of Southfield:
"I think Joe Lieberman is one of
the most fantastic men that I
have ever heard about. I think
that he and Al Gore would be
the absolute most perfect people
to run this nation. I was just so
excited and moved by the rally, I
was almost crying. I got his
autograph and that was one of
the best things that has ever hap-
pened to me."

Zygie Allweiss of West
Bloomfield:

"He's a good, smart, relaxed speaker
and told some good jokes, too.''

"We are very encouraged.
"This is the first time in the
history of the presidential cam-
paign where the vice-presidential
candidate early on comes and
meets members of the Arab com-
munity," she added.
Ahwal said that the perception
that Lieberman would not be able
to separate his religious beliefs
from his public life in the minds
of Arabs offends her.
"This is a guy who has dedicat-
ed himself to public service. He
has shown his loyalty again and
again to America by working as
an attorney general and as a con-
gressman," she said. "For people
to assume just because he is of
one background, like [the
Catholic John F.] Kennedy 40
years ago, he's going to be
aligned. I am offended."
Hadassah Lieberman said her
husband's personal beliefs affect-
ing his ability to be impartial isn't
an issue.
"He's running for vice presi-
dent and meeting \\Pith many dif-
ferent groups across the country
with many different interests and
ideologies and religious and
races," she said. "This is what he
needs to do. His faith is his per-
sonal, private faith that he is
involved with, but
proud of
it is his personal faith." ❑
