GLOSS COM Petrov

Jessica Jacobs, 21, of
Huntington Woods:
"I was happy that [Sen. Joseph
Lieberman] mentioned a
women's right to choose.
Everything he said showed he
was a very family-oriented per-
son, for health care for your chil-
dren and your parents. I feel a
part of the reason he was chosen
was because he is a moral man
and that came through. His wife
obviously has a lot of respect for
him and what he does. It's good
to see a Jewish politician making
his way to the higher ranks of
the [Democratic] Parry."

Joel Jacob of
West Bloomfield:
"I met him several times
through Seeds of Peace
and was with Joe and
Joel Jacob
Hadassah at several
events in Washington.
What you see is what you get --
the Liebermans are such nice peo-
ple. You see the glow. This is such
an exciting time for us — what an
example for our youth. We as Jews
in the Detroit-area were able to
make a different with Soviet Jews
and here we are again with this
opportunity.'

Rabbi Leonardo
Bitran of Congregation
Shaarey Zedek:
"He is very convincing
-- very intelligent.
Rabbi
When he comes out of
Bitran
his script and makes a
joke, he is vei7 quick. It seems he
is very interested in what he has to
present and how that differs from
the Republican platform. And that
makes a difference — and based
on that, I think I like him. I
respect his point of view — he is
very clear thinking ... and can fol-
low what the country needs. He
talks about fairness and prosperity,
and that to me is the key"

Larry Winer of Oak Park:
"I'm incredibly proud of the first Jew
on a major [presidential] ticket. At
this time, I believe he is the right
man for the job. As far as his speech,
the words were good, but it wasn't so
much the words as the presence. He
kept his delivery — not politically

Rev. Anthony welcomes Sen. Lieberman
to Fellowship Chapel.

Lieberman reminded the crowd that
it was Vice President Al Gore who
broke the barrier by selecting a Jewish
running mate. "In America, I was raised
to believe that this is a ladder, and those
who have a chance to step up one rung
have a responsibility to turn back and
help everybody," Lieberman said. "That
is the responsibility that I take as the
nominee for vice president.
"Another barrier may fall as well,"
he said. "I hope that it will enable
people — all people — who are
moved, to feel more free to talk about
their faith and about their religion.
And I hope that it will reinforce the
belief that I feel as strongly as any-
thing else that there must be a place
for faith in America's public life."
His religious comments at the
church sparked a reaction from the
Anti-Defamation League on Monday,
Aug. 28. The organization called on
Lieberman "to refrain from overt expres
sions of religious values and beliefs."
"Candidates should feel comfort-
able explaining their religious convic-
tions to voters," wrote Howard P.
Berkowitz, ADL national chairman,
and Abraham H. Foxman, ADL
national director, in a letter to
Lieberman. "At the same time, howev
er, we believe there is a point at whic h
an emphasis on religion in a political
campaign becomes inappropriate and
even unsettling in a religiously divers
society such as ours."
The letter specifically cites
Lieberman's quote urging people to
" reaffirm our faith and renew the ded
cation of our nation and ourselves to
God and God's purpose."
"Language such as this risks aliena
ing the American people," the ADL
officials wrote in their letter. "We fee
very strongly ... that appealing along
religious lines, or belief in God, is
