Coach Andy Tucker's team came
together in the face of adverse condi-
dons — temperatures in the mid-90s
and tough, hilly courses.
Individual medalists included
Justin Shane (silver), Brett Ehrmann
(bronze), Carly Shiff (silver and
bronze); and in team competition,
Sam Madorsky and Justin Shane
(gold and bronze) and Kory West
(bronze).

Boys Basketball, 13-14

Coach Barry Bershad's team won
their first two games and finished 3-
3, making the second round of play-
offs. Bershad praised the play of Brad
Stulberg, Sam Siegel, Chad Mahakian
and Alex Shiffman.
The high point of the tournament,
Bershad said, was the second game
against the Richmond Reds when
Detroit had the ball, down a point,
with seconds to play, after trailing 14-
0. Max Jacobson launched a shot at
the buzzer which bounced "about five
times on the rim" before falling in to
give Detroit a 39-38 victory. "The
boys were rolling around on the
court, like they just won the NBA
championship," he said.
In the Thursday track meet, Chad
Mahakian won gold in the 400
meters and bronze in the long jump
and 200 meters. Brad Stulberg won
silver medals in the shot put and 200
meters and bronze in the 400 meters.
They both won gold in the 4x100
and 4x400 relays.

Although they only had one substi-
tute, the girls basketball team still
managed to win half its games, fin-
ishing 3-3. Coach Brian Kaufman
said his team was just a couple play-
ers short of being very competitive.
His team obliterated Richmond
Red and Hartford, 54-3 and 58-6,
but could not draw near the upper
echelon teams.
"We did very well, with only one
substitute and playing three games in
one day," said Kaufman. "The team
never gave up."
