tuals who felt Nietzsche's ideas spoke to
the Diaspora Jew and the inclusive soci-
ety they, along with Nietzsche, sought.
Jewish philosopher Martin Buber
was a disciple of Nietzsche, translating
the first portion of Thus Spake
Zarathustra into his native Polish.
When Buber joined the Zionist move-
ment, he injected Zionism with a
Nietzschean perspective and wrote
fondly about the philosopher who had
died a few months before. Nietzsche's
ideas infected the Zionists with a sense
of hope and spiritual rebirth, calling
for a Jewish Renaissance.
Father of psychoanalysis Sigmund
Freud said that Nietzsche had more
penetrating knowledge of himself than
any other man who ever lived or was
ever likely to live. Further, Freud con-
fessed that Nietzsche had anticipated
many of his own important ideas
about the human psyche.
"'This I did,' says my memory.
`This I cannot have done,' says my
pride, and remains adamant. Finally
— memory yields," Nietzsche wrote in
his book, Beyond Good and Evil —
certainly a poetic description of
repressed memory, an important ele-
ment of Freud's work.
Nietzsche's works have affected
many thinkers and artists, Jewish and
non-Jewish, for many generations.
Among playwrights, poets and novel-
ists, they include Luigi Pirandello,
Stefan George, George Bernard Shaw,
William Bulter Yeats, Thomas Mann
and Herman Hesse.
He also inspired composers Richard
Strauss and Gustav Mahler, and influ-
enced philosophers, psychologists and
theologians Carl Jung, Alfred Adler,
Michel Foucault, Albert Camus, Jean-
Paul Sartre, Martin Heidegger, Jacques
Derrida, Paul Tillich and Lev Shestov.
