"I was most interested in how the history interacts with the people, and the concept of the ethnic mix deep- ened my understanding," said Jason Massman of West Bloomfield. A transplanted Texan, he first visited Israel on a Dallas teen tour in 1987. Debbie Schwartzenfeld of West Bloomfield said the class was "like a refresher course." "It got me excited about going," she said. "Another advantage is you get to know each other." The Young Adult Division also held a pre-mission get-together and a post-mission debriefing. Will the classes be held again next year? "Absolutely," said trip co-chair Scott Kaufman of Birmingham. Once the mission got to Israel, the results were apparent, he said. In earlier years, tour guides had assumed knowledge that people didn't have, and mission participants, who come from a wide array of back- grounds, were often afraid to ask. This mission was different, Kaufman said. "When we were in the Golan Heights, for example, we ran short of time.
