here are a lot of good rea-
sons to make aliya,
including compelling reli-
gious and cultural ones. If
you're a computer geek, there's
more: good jobs in Israel, and a
chance to get in on an economic
transformation that's turning Israel
into a Mideast version of
California's Silicon Valley.
"Computer Jobs in Israel" is a sim-
ple, straightforward site aimed at
helping Jews here connect with those
jobs.
The site has been a labor of love
for Jacob Richman since 1993 —
first as an e-mail mailing list, and
now as a bare bones Web site that
archives past newsletters. The ser-
vice is free, although he does invite
visitors to contribute to Jewish
charities.
Several times a month, Richman
sends out an information-packed
newsletter listing good jobs in
Israel's burgeoning information
technology sector.
The postings are full of the jargon
that comes naturally to Generation
Xers, but is incomprehensible to
many older people. "Experience in
X)0(68 and FGPA development an
advantage," says one ad, and
"Familiarity with Synopsys/Verilog a
plus."
Imagine translating that into
Hebrew.
Postings are by company; many
companies have multiple openings.
The site provides the basic infor-
mation needed to decide if you're a
potential candidate — job descrip-
tion, requirements — plus some basic
background on the company.
There's also a list of upcoming
computer and high-tech conferences
in Israel, salary data and a collection
of Web links that could prove u eful
to high-tech job seekers.
The site is direct and to the point,
without fancy graphics. There is no
animation to slow you down and no
advertising. It has a single job to do,
and it does it well.
