Kitty Dubin.
"I like the feeling that I'm contributing some-
thing to putting shows on for the public," Beer says.
Dillick, former dean of the school of social
work at Wayne State University, reads plays with
an eye for the dramatic representation of society's
problems —through all kinds of human behavior.
"As we meet in our sessions and discuss the
plays, each member's insights help other m tubers
see more fully what playwrights had in mind and
the meanings for our audiences," says Dillick,
whose interest in theater dates back to performing
with a high-school troupe.
"We try very hard to bring new playwrights to
the attention of our audiences when they have
written quality scripts, and there's a high degree of
satisfaction in doing that."
Bert and Larry Wember, who have served as pro-
fessional librarians, are the husband-wife segment of
the committee. Making frequent trips to see
Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, they are able to
have preliminary discussions of plays for JET before
opening their ideas to the rest of the committee.
When JET presents the annual "Festival of
Staged Readings," which introduces new works, it's
almost as if the Play Selection Committee has
opened its ranks to people in the audience. After
the presentation, all the comments help the Often-
fledgling playwrights and offer insight into what
would be applauded in upcoming JET productions.
Orbach, who reads about 75 plays each year,
seeks to understand the point of view of each
committee member as a play is recommended.
Sometimes she will go off to spend days doing
nothing beyond reviewing scripts.
"Ultimately, we want to give each playwright a
chance and protect what they all have written,"
Orbach says. ❑

Plays are staged in the Aaron DeRoy Theatre
at the Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield. For information about season
