court. The hockey center has a sepa-
rate entrance and its own parking area
off Maple Road, a reception area and
four dressing rooms for coaches, play-
ers and referees.
Steven Friedman, coach of the
Detroit Maccabi Club's in-line hockey
team, proposed the concept to the
JCC. "There is a huge, growing pop-
ularity to the sport and one of
Marshall's many strengths is his step-
by-step approach in teaching the chil-
dren in their formative years," says
Friedman. Shencopp taught
Friedman's children in hockey clinics
years ago.
"What's appealing about in-line
skating is that you can do it any-
where, even in your side driveway,"
says Shencopp. "It costs a lot less than
ice hockey; and you don't need as
much equipment. Here at the JCC,
the leagues will play out of one cen-
tral location, and for now there will
be no travel." Adds Debbie, "That is
certainly a strong point." ❑
