Rewards Of The Job

After spending 2 1/2 years as program
coordinator for the Chabad world
headquarters office in New York,
Rabbi Ovadia Goldman decided he
wanted to direct his own Chabad
House. He and his wife Nechoma
relocated their family to Oklahoma
City two years ago.

think of a rabbi as someone in a syna-
gogue where a few old men go. I seek to
make some part of religion meaningful
to everyone."
Rabbi Myers' wife Chana, grand-
daughter of former Detroiter Morris
Magy and his wife Mildred, grew up
in a Chabad-involved home. His par-
ents, however, were very surprised at
first by his life choice: "Now the bene-
fits of my life are apparent to them. I
have a strong family unit and my chil-
dren are well-educated."
Kindergarten classes and an after-
school religious school have moved
from the Myers' home into a new
600-square-foot education center, also
used for adult classes, summer camp
and other programming.
"We are the only Jewish school," he
says. "Our kids have gone there for
kindergarten, too." But the oldest of his
seven children now are enrolled in a
Chabad school in Austria, a 75-minute
drive from their home.
Raising funds, Rabbi Myers says,
becomes creative in a foreign country.
Aside from tuition brought in from the
school, Rabbi Myers often calls on
American, Austrian, Israeli and
Canadian donors he knows have
Slovakian backgrounds, hoping they will
support the Chabad House.

Today, there are more than
3,700 Chabad emissary families
worldwide.
"The process is somewhat of a
matchmaking system," says
Rabbi Zalman Shmotkin, a
spokesperson for Chabad's
Central Organization for Jewish
Education in New York.
Many emissaries choose their
communities based on part-
time, past experience in that
country. Once a decision is
made, Rabbi Shmotkin says,
"They plan to stay forever. There
is very little shuffling."
Emissaries are typically young
married couples. Most remain in
their home countries for a year
or two after marriage, while the
husbands continue post-graduate
rabbinical studies, before leaving
for new communities.
While the United States pro-
vides most of the over 100 cou-
ples who will become Chabad
emissaries this year, others come
from elsewhere, including Israel
and South America.
Full-time, residential emis-
saries work in 48 countries,
establishing new communities or
joining existing ones. In 52
additional countries, there is
summer or holiday program-
ming, such as camps and High
Holiday programs.
.Funding for emissaries begins
at home. Each family takes with
them at least one year's finances,
provided by the community that
helps them find their location.
Beyond that, each facility is
responsible for individual fund-
raising. With the process very
decentralized, no records exist
on which streams of Judaism are
providing the financial support.
Locally, however, most dona-
tions made to Chabad are from
non-observant members of the
Jewish community.
At Rabbi Elimelich
Silberberg's Sara Tugman Bais
Chabad Torah Center, "they are
half-and-half,' he says. "But you
don't just have [financial] sup-
porters. They are all involved on
some spiritual level, in class or
in shul or both. Once they
become involved, it is like
touching a spiritual spark." ❑
