Everything Old Ls Well, Old

ge, I'm, told, is a relative thing. Relative
to what has yet to be clearly explained.
I am not sensitive to being an older
person. There are many
immediate benefits; the
slightly reduced movie ticket
price is right up there at the
top of the list. What I am
sensitive about are the little
reminders about age that
seem to be cropping up more
often.
Why can't my doctors
explain my physical imperfec-
SY MANELLO
tions without the accompa-
Editorial Assistant nying, "Well, at your age ..."?
Why are older people an
entirely different category? For instance, a TV ad
for vitamins proclaims, "One for men; one for
women and one for those in their silver years." Are
we older folks now genderless?
Contact with young people can sometimes
remind one, even humorously, of one's age. The
time has long passed since we convinced our eldest
grandchild Sam that we could not play our boom
boxes very loudly for fear of angering the
dinosaurs. However, he got in a good one when
we presented his baby brother Eddie with some
rag dolls on which we had our pictures placed.
Sam said to his mother (our daughter Sharon),
"Mom, Bubbie [my wife, Pearl] sure looks a lot
like you."
"Why is that do you suppose?" Sharon asked.
"Well," he said, "you're both old!" Two birds
with one stone, as it were.
On a recent visit, he accompanied us to Henry
Ford Museum in Dearborn. We were delighted by
the old cars with the small windows and running
boards. Our funniest moment came when we
entered the old kitchen appliance section and Sam
asked, "Bubbie, which was the kitchen you had
when you were little?" And there it was!
Age is really mind over matter. If you don't
mind, it doesn't matter. After all, consider the
alternative. D
