Raised by modern Orthodox parents, Shapiro gravitated towards Zen Buddhism as a teen, and he continues to incorporate both tra- ditions in his sermons. Currently the senior rabbi of Temple Beth Or in Miami, a Reform institution that he has led for the past 20 years, and the director of the Sh'ma Center for Jewish Meditation, he sees a connection between the two ancient religions. "What I really like about mysti- cal Judaism is its ability to take the Buddhist experience of oneness and apply it to the concrete reality of making the world a better place to live," Shapiro said. While the rabbi eschews the "rigid, detached" God of his Orthodox youth, he nonetheless considers the traditions and rituals of Judaism a balm in a harried world. "Judaism is such a powerful way of living," Shapiro said. "The Sabbath is a wonderful opportuni- ty to let go of all the workday per- sonas we adopt and get back to God, and to oneness." Although admittedly a dabbler in a plethora of religious disciplines and thinking, Shapiro believes that the Book of Ecclesiastes contains all the food for thought a person might need. In addition to the oft quoted "To everything there is a season," Ecclesiastes contains a number of other pithy sayings. Among them: "Keep your mouth from being rash," "A good name is better than fragrant oil" and "Words spoken softly by wise men are heeded sooner than those W hat shall you do? Work yourself to distraction? Distract yourself from work? Neither extreme is desirable. Better the middle way: Eat and enjoy your food in the com- pany of friends; Work and enjoy the capacities of body and mind. In this world of seeming separation and divided minds, There is no escape from imperma- nence. Do not build a fortress against loss Or lay siege to eternity. Rather, open your eyes to the wonder of the fleeting - And make of each moment an oppor- tunity to do what needs doing. Your days are few and You cannot know •which will be your last. Appreciate the moment. Sharpen your mind. Live with attention. Live without expectation. And let sorrow and joy take care of themselves. — Ecclesiastes, 5:17-19, translated by Rabbi Rami Shapiro shouted by a lord in folly." While discussing both Solomon and Ecclesiastes, Shapiro noted that "in Western society, we tend to look at emotions as though we were in a soap opera. Everything is so melodramatic. There's no room for quiet contempla- tion of emotion. "Solomon really simplified things. Basically, he said, we need to live in the moment more." ❑ I 1 I With Purchase Of Another Pound I I Of ANY Pasta Salad I L l With . Coupon Only Expires 8/17/00 a ta02.
