"This is not a Madison Avenue
politician," said Rabbi Daniel
Nevins, president of the Michigan
Board of Rabbis. "This is a person
who can be trusted as a voice of
goodness and reason and ethics in
our society."
Rabbi E.B. "Bunny" Freedman of
the Southfield-based Jewish Chaplaincy
and Hospice Network said Lieberman
is a great role model who will main-
stream the Orthodox movement.
"Those who look at Orthodoxy as
antiquated, can look at Lieberman as
someone at the core who is able to
participate fully."

Communal Leaders

While some take great pride in a
Jewish candidate for vice president,
some thoughts of increased antisemit-
ic incidents can't be ignored.
Many others hope his ability to
lead — not his Jewishness — will be
the focus of this campaign.
Penny Blumenstein, Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit
president, called the choice a historic
moment. "It's remarkable, given the
long history of the United States, this
is the first time that someone Jewish
has achieved such political promi-
nence," she said. "To be very honest,
I felt the same kind of joy and pride
when Geraldine Ferraro was chosen
[as Democrat Michael Dukakis' run-
ning mate in 1988]. I'm hoping that
he was selected not because he was
Jewish, but because he had the per-
sonal qualities and legislative record
needed for the job."
Philanthropist David Hermelin,
former ambassador to Norway and a
Democratic fundraising powerhouse,
is thrilled Lieberman was chosen.
"He's a good guy, well-spoken, and
I think it's going to be a good ticket,"
he said. Lieberman's outspokenness
on the impeachment was a big plus.
"I'm optimistic that he'll create a lot
of interest," Hermelin said.
Addressing the antisemitism issue,
Don Cohen, director of the Anti-
Defamation League's Michigan
regional office, said little can be read
into an increase in hate-filled mes-
sages on Internet message boards.
"It's nothing new for hate groups
to talk about Jewish control of the
government. You can peruse their
Web sites, and it's prominently fea-
tured where they talk about Jews in
the Clinton cabinet and administra-
