Young Israel of Oak Park will host a
Day of Appreciation to honor its for-
mer leader, Rabbi Steven Weil, and his
wife Yael 10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, at
Yeshivat Akiva in Southfield.
After nearly six years in the Detroit
area, the Well family has relocated to
Beverly Hills, Calif Rabbi Well
accepted a position there as senior
rabbi of Beth Jacob Congregation.
Under his leadership, Young Israel
became the largest Orthodox congre-
gation in Michigan, with 260 member
families. Continuing to grow in terms
of membership and physical size, con-
struction is scheduled to begin this
week on a new sanctuary and social
hall on the site of the current syna-
gogue.
In addition to the Wells' own chil-
dren — Malky, 10; Kayla, 8; Rachel,
4; Josh, 6; and Benjy, 3 — local
youngsters and teens came to know
the Well home in Oak Park as a wel-
coming place to spend evenings and
weekends.
Joseph Greenberg, a synagogue
member, cited the rabbi's "constructive
and worthwhile approach to market-
ing — attracting people who may oth-
erwise not attend learning classes,"

among them, Rabbi Weil's Torah class
for cigar smokers like himself and a
cappuccino drinkers' class, taught by
both the rabbi and Mrs. Weil.
Because the rabbi is known for
building bridges between the
Orthodox community and other
movements of Judaism, a Book of
Memories will be presented to the
Wells. The book will include names of
friends and associates from throughout
the greater Detroit Jewish community.
Speakers at the event will include
Robert Aronson, chief executive officer
of the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit in Bloomfield
Township and Rabbi Shmuel Irons of
the Kollel Institute in Oak Park.
Entries in the Book of Memories
are $36-$360, which includes two
seats at the tribute ceremony. Proceeds
from the day will be used to dedicate a
portion of the new sanctuary in honor
of the Wells.
To become a sponsor of the Book
of Memories or to purchase tickets for
the event, call Pia Katz, (248) 552-
1991, or Sandra Greenberg, (248)

544-4699.
