Whistle Blower At WAND Event

Metro Detroit Women's Action for New
Directions is hosting a public forum
with Dr. Nina Schwartz of Torrance,
Calif, the whistle blower for the defense
contractor TRW, 7 p.m. Monday, Aug.
21, in the Marcotte Room of the
Southfield Public Library.
Dr. Schwartz, a senior engineer at
TRW in 1995-96, was fired for reveal-
ing flaws in the proposed $60 billion
national missile defense system.
Also speaking will be Dr. Theodore
A. Postol, a physicist at Massachusetts
Institute of Technology. He proved that
the proposed $60 billion missile shield
for the United States is based on fraudu-
lent testing systems.
WAND'S mission is to empower
women to act politically to reduce vio-
lence and militarism and also to redirect
excessive military resources to human
and environmental needs.
Dr. Schwartz charged that TRW falsi-

fled work that was meant to help
antimissile interceptors to distinguish
incoming warheads from decoys. Her
superiors at the company fired her when
she brought the results of her analysis
for the "kill vehicle" performance to
their attention. She challenged the com-
pany's success-rate claim.
President Bill Clinton is scheduled to
make a decision this summer on
whether to field a complicated National
Missile Defense Plan that, according to
WAND, has repeatedly failed to per-
form properly.
It is WAND'S position that confirma-
tion of the plan would violate the 1972
ABM Treaty with Russia; further desta-
bilize relations with other countries; and
lead to more cuts in domestic programs.
Admission to the forum is free. Those
attending will receive a whistle to "wake
up" their legislators. For information,
call Fern Katz, (248) 557-7505.
