tion, and how important that is to
their conspiracy," he said. "They
believed in Jewish control and no
amount of factual information is
going to change that."
Raising another point, Cohen said,
"While it's worth recognizing that this
is the first Jewish person on a major
party ticket, I think it can be
overblown that this will be a deciding
factor for many voters."

Detroit community and religious
leaders have all agreed on the integrity
of the man who may become vice
president.
Cardinal Adam Maida,
Archbishop of Detroit, said religion
shouldn't be a factor in choosing a
candidate. Referring to John F.
Kennedy's election as a "teachable
moment," he said, "In my mind, it
comes down to this: a political leader
should be chosen according to his
performance and his principles, not
simply party affiliation, mere self-
interest or, most certainly, the church
to which he belongs."
"I kind of get offended when they
make a big deal because he's Jewish,"
said Robert Ghannam, director of
corporate relations for the Arab
American and Chaldean Council in
Southfield. "I'm sure we would feel
the same way if he were a Moslem
candidate. He should be judged on
his track record. When it comes down
to humanistic issues, he's always been
pretty fair-minded and not afraid to
speak his mind."
N. Charles Anderson, head of the
Detroit Urban League, said he doesn't
know that much about Lieberman,
but trusts Gore's judgment.
"What I've read about Lieberman
is he's a man of integrity, a man of
ethics and sticks close to them. I
believe he will be a friend to the
African American community as has
been Vice President Gore and
President Clinton.
"I think it does open the door for
others to move into prominent roles,"
Anderson said. "I think there could
be some residual effect and benefits to
Senator Lieberman being on the tick-
et, because one of the things the
country still has to fully overcome is
our racial divide, our ethnic divide,
our gender divide, and this is an
opportunity to do that." ❑
