Moral Authority

his week marked a turning point for
Jews in America. Al Gore's selection
of a modern Orthodox Jew,
Connecticut Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, as
the Democratic vice presidential candidate
felt to many like the culmination of a centu-
ry of Jewish life in this country that had
long been tinged with a certain bashfulness.
The choice won accolades from Jews, of
course, but also from other minorities and

trump presumed prejudice.
In the package of stories beginning on
page 6, we explore the candidate and the
reaction to his selection. You'll learn how your neighbors and
Detroit community leaders feel about the decision. In a coltimn
on page 37, Publisher Arthur M. Horwitz recalls what he learned
when he worked both for, and against, Lieberman in Connecticut
government. And in an editorial on page 35, we tell you why we
think Gore's choice matters so deeply.

Maccabi Magic

mid the American Jewish communi-
ty's euphoria over Al Gore's landmark
choice of Connecticut Senator Joe
Lieberman as his running mate, a contingent
of local teenagers is preparing to make
friends and interact Jewishly while compet-
ing in an array of competitive disciplines at
the JCC Maccabi Games.
ROBERT A.
There's no doubt about the senator's
SKLAR
lewishness.
An Orthodox Jew, he adheres to
Editor
Halacha (Jewish law) while still serving the
national interest. But at an impressionable,
churn-filled time in their young lives, teens are still shaping their
J ewish identity — still deciding what it means to be Jewish.
For all the hoopla surrounding the annual competition,
Maccabi is really a Jewish experience, thanks to evening activities
that stress Jewish identity. Staff Writer David Sachs wrote
`Maccabi Magic" (beginning on page 91),
under Associate Editor Alan Hitsky's direc-
tion.
Two years after hosting nearly 4,000 com-
petitors and coaches for a national contest,
the Maccabi Club of Metropolitan Detroit
still recruited 166 teens and 36 coaches for
this year's regional games in Cincinnati,
Richmond and Staten Island. On this eve of
the 2000 games, we take pride in the love for
competition, the quest for camaraderie and
the vigor for Judaism that resonate wherever
the Maccabi torch is lit.
May the games again be a bounty and a
blessing for competitors and coaches alike.
