quality of Jewish education."
Berry likens being synagogue presi-
dent to being a managing partner. He's
responsible for overseeing the financial,
operating and general administrative
functions of the 2,200-family syna-
gogue. He views the members as equal
partners, each with a spiritual, emotional
and financial investment.
Berry said he hopes to begin involv-
ing the "silent partners" in synagogue
planning and programs. "To my mind,"
he said, "being a Jew requires action. As
with any of life's endeavors, the more
you put into something the more you
get out of it."
He and his wife Sharon have been
married 30 y ars.
"I asked my husband if he was
willing to make this 10-year commit-
ment and, if so, I would support
him," Sharon Berry said. "It is a huge
commitment, not just for him, but as
a family. I have also been active in
the synagogue."
She added: "The wonderful aspect of
the position is that he is in contact with
staff and working with members on the
committees."

Teaming Up

"I have a great group of officers on the
executive board. I like to work in con-
sensus with them," Lawrence Berry said.
Other officers include James Safran
of Bloomfield Hills, first vice president;
Steven Weisberg of West Bloomfield,
second vice president; Anita Naftaly of
West Bloomfield, treasurer; and David
Broner of West Bloomfield, secretary.
Harold Berry, Lawrence's father,
beams over his son's dedication to
Shaarey Zedek. "In a family, one is
gratified if as a parent you can trans-
mit good values. I never said to my
son, 'You should become president of
the synagogue,' just like my father
never said this to me. It is exciting to
hold a position of service. It feels good
to transmit Jewish values."
Harold mentioned that his grandfa-
ther on his mother's side, Elozer
Eisenman, led a synagogue in Liverpool,
England. That makes Lawrence a
fourth-generation synagogue president.
"It is very rare and extraordinarily
precious that we witness the presidency
of a son in a distinguished father's and
revered grandfather s lifetime," said
Rabbi Irvin Groner of Shaarey Zedek.
Each generation, Rabbi Groner
said, must find the way of faith, ser-
vice and devotion.
"Lawrence Berry," he said, "has
found his own path of leadership and
achievement."
