hen Kroger supermarkets
began bringing in kosher
meats to selected Detroit-area
stores, it chose to use a Brooklyn
firm that carries both the Orthodox
Union (OU) and KAJ hechshers
(kosher certification labels).
"We wanted the highest certifica-
tion, something that was recognized
by all groups," said Karen Bird,
head of the meat department in eth-
nic foods for Kroger in southeast
Michigan.
Selected Hiller's markets have
been carrying Aaron's for more than
a year, according to James Hiller.
He said it is fresh-cut — not deli —
packaged at the butcher. "Someone
who is observant can pick up all
their items in our stores."

Hiller said Aaron's products have
been especially popular in Hiller's
Ann Arbor store.
Kroger is adding a mashgiach
(kosher supervisor) and special
kosher market within its 12 Mile
and Halsted store in Farmington
Hills. The store is scheduled to re-
open after renovations on Aug. 23.
The kosher market will include
Aaron's deli-sliced and fresh, pack-
aged meats, Empire fresh and frozen
poultry, and other kosher products.
Kroger released a statement say-
ing that it has "worked closely with
Rabbi Joseph Krupnik of the
Council of Orthodox Rabbis to
expand its kosher product lines in
its stores in areas where the Jewish
community lives."
Farmer Jack supermarkets are
building a new store on the site of
the former Crowley's department
store at 12 Mile and Farmington
roads in Farmington Hills. A
spokesman for Farmer Jack's meat
department said last month he had
"heard nothing" about adding a
kosher butcher market at that site.
Farmer Jack has kosher butcher
sections, supervised by the Vaad, in
three stores: Coolidge and 10 Mile
in Oak Park, Southfield Road at
Webster in Southfield, and Maple
and Orchard Lake roads in West
Bloomfield. 0

Other Concerns

But other local business owners also
have questioned the Vaad — and not
just about fees.
Sherry Gilman has called the Vaad
unreasonable following her yearlong
dispute with its rabbis over the super-
vision of her store. She is in the
process of purchasing Dexter Davison
Kosher Meat & Poultry in Oak Park.
Following a disagreement with her
supervisor and the Council of

Orthodox Rabbis, she was issued an
ultimatum by the Vaad demanding
she give a "direct personal apology" to
a supervisor she had allegedly insulted
and that she forgo butchering fresh
meat from Cornbelt Packing in
Detroit. She was told instead to pur-
chase pre-kashered, pre-packaged meat
from Cornbelt.
A letter to Gilman from the Vaad
stated: "Should the above not be
acceptable to you, we see no other
alternative but to inform immediately
all the relevant places that your store is
no longer under our supervision."
In her reply, Gilman said her super-
visor made negative comments about
her store. But Gilman believes the
underlying reason for the dispute is
sexism: the Vaad doesn't support
women business owners. She will con-
