Zurich/JTA — The Nestle food com-
pany said it will contribute to a $1.25
billion settlement reached between
Holocaust survivors and Switzerland's
largest banks, but on one condition.
The Switzerland-based company
said it wants the U.S. judge who
approved the settlement last week to
protect Swiss companies that employed
forced laborers at their German units.
Nestle used such laborers at several
small subsidiaries in Nazi Germany.

Israelis Wanted
Peres For President

Jerusalem/JTA — Most Israelis would
have preferred Shimon Peres as their
president, according to a poll pub-
lished the day after the Nobel Peace
Prize laureate's stunning defeat by
secret Knesset ballot to lawmaker
Moshe Katsay.
The survey of 520 people, pub-
lished in the Israeli daily Yediot
Achronot, found that 54 percent pre-
ferred Peres, 42 percent were for
Katsav and 4 percent had no response.
