was imported from Thailand and does seem out of
place among the kibbutz's more austere structures.

Tower Of David Under Glass

The Tower of David Museum, already a must-see
attraction for tourists to Jerusalem's Old City, has
become a must with Israelis, too, especially at night.
The reason? The spectacular Chihuly glass exhibit. The
Seattle-based icon (who cut his creative teeth at
Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills), takes glass sculpture to
unbelievable levels with massive and fragile structures.
Special lighting, and the moon and stars overhead,
make this a new and unique experience.

Israeli Originals...

The best challa in the central Galilee is found in
Nazareth's El-Ghardi Arab quarter... Traffic rotaries are
as prevalent as desert sand. On a recent weekday, one
rotary in Hadera was backed up for 30 minutes in all
directions. Another rotary in Afula has a worn strip
down the middle, indicative of notoriously impatient
drivers recognizing that the shortest distance between
two points is a straight line... Stepping into a soon-to-be
developed neighborhood in the new town of Shoham,
just a few kilometers from Ben-Gurion Airport, one
finds an ancient wine press in the underbrush. And
most of us get excited if we find an Indian arrowhead...
Super Lotto ads and kiosks promise instant riches —
more serious gamblers head to Jericho, where the
Palestinian Authority's casino caters to its overwhelming-
ly Israeli clientele... Twenty years ago, it could take years
to receive a phone line in your house or place of busi-
ness. Today, a family of five could have five cell phones,
each with a different chime and a different color.
You never know who'll turn up in the lobby of a
hotel. At: the secluded oceanfront Holiday Inn in
Ashkelon, political-spectrum-spanning former cabi-
net minister Dan Meridor is plotting strategy with
members of the Israel Democracy Institute. A week
later, he's plotting strategy with Prime Minister Ehud
Barak at Camp David... Gas is $4.49 shekels per
litre — that's about 54 a gallon. Makes our prices
look cheap. Then again, I didn't see any SUVs...
Sixteen-year-old Maya Ozery, who spent her forma-
tive years in Detroit and is the daughter of former
shaliach. Yefet Ozery and his wife, Kathy, is the
youngest member of the women's Israel National
Soccer Team. She recently returned from matches
throughout the former Soviet Union...
Tours of new facilities at Alyn Hospital in Kiryat
Hayovel, Jerusalem and the Holland Center in Bet
Yam, both serving disabled children, include specially
sealed, self-contained, air-filtered rooms. These are
reminders of the 1991 Gulf War, when even the most
incapacitated people wore individual gas masks while
Scud missiles from Iraq landed throughout Israel...
Surrounded by rows of barbed wire, a lone vendor
oversees a once-bustling souvenir and concession
stand at the former site of Metulla's "Good Fence"
between Israel and Lebanon. No customers. No busi-
ness. At this moment, no stones, either. In the back-
ground, the Israeli and Lebanese flags remain linked
with words from Isaiah: "...and they shall beat their
swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning
hooks/nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
neither shall they learn war any more."
