Walter Stark, at the Detroit Tennis 6.
Squash Club, with his championship
trophy.
Championships at the Detroit Tennis
& Squash Club in Farmington Hills
for the second straight year.
Stark of Huntington Woods turns
81 on Sept. 13. He was ranked num-
ber one in his age group in the
Midwest this year, and his 89 com-
petitors knew they were in for a chal-
lenge. His passion for tennis and his
competitiveness are unleashed on the
court.
"He's very much a competitor,"
said Dean Snyder, general manager of
the Detroit Tennis & Squash Club.
"To play at that level of a tournament,
you've got to be competitive."
The four-day, outdoor tournament
in late June was played with beautiful
weather and 100 spectators cheering
on the participants.
"I think that a lot of players think
of Stark as a role model because he is
still playing tennis at that age," said
Snyder.
A founding member of Detroit
Squash & Tennis, Stark has played
tennis four-five days a week for the
past 50 years. His first win in compe-
tition "was in Germany in 1935. I was
very young, a junior in high school."
"As far as I'm concerned," said
Stark, "I'd probably be in a crazy
house now without tennis." The
Temple Emanu-El member said he
plans to continue playing the game he
loves and running his high-technology
business, Stark and Sons manufactur-
ers' representatives in Southfield.
