ported by recently
released information about America's
TV viewing habits from the highly
respected Pew Research Center for
the People and the Press in
Washington, D.C. This independent
opinion research group is sponsored
by the Philadelphia-based Pew
Charitable Trusts.
Whereas 74 percent of those sur-
veyed in 1994 reported watching a
news broadcast or news-based pro-
ABC, CBS and NBC. With their
chronic sensationalism and their
chronic ideological bias, the network
news groups have simply forfeited
trust, says Pew.
"It's true that regular local and
network TV news have more com-
petition from cable stations, the
Internet and others. Viewers have
more options now," Upchurch con-
ceded. "Local TV news is fighting
that trend, so it's imperative that we
just have to be that much better —
and I think we are."
