Kamerman and Natasha Lvonne
shared real-life anecdotes about grow-
ing up Jewish.)
Kamerman's job was to make the set
look as plastic and fake as the premise
of the film (although such deprogram-
ming centers do exist). "Everything
looks candy-coated," she says. "We
used extremes of pink and blue, lots of
plastic, no natural materials.
"It looks simple," she says,- "but I
had stacks of research material. I
wanted a Pop Art influence — mini-
malist, but graphic and sculptural."
Kamerman is responsible for the
visual look of a film. She translates the
script into visual metaphors, collabo-
rating with the director, costume
designer and cinematographer. "It's a
fast-paced job," she says.

world on a sound stage or on location.
It's exciting, exhilarating arid. exhaust-
ing." Most of Cheerleader was shot in
the desert, in Palmdale, Calif.
And there are perks, lots of them.
Like hobnobbing with Brendan Fraser,
Keanu Reeves and Faye Dunaway, some
of the stars Kamerman met as art direc-
tor of such films as Twilight of the Golds
and The Last Time I Committed Suicide.
"I hung out with Faye in her
kitchen," says Kamerman, in her best
sultry Dunaway voice.
Then there was the Sundance Film
Festival. "It was amazing. Like
Disneyland," says Kamerman. "You
can watch films 13 hours a day. In.2
1/2 days, I slept 6 1/2 hours." And
Cheerleader got lots of design attention
after premiering at Sundance.
It's a far cry from Kamerman's child-
hood days in Southfield, where she was
active in BBYO and attended Camp
Tamarack for four years. "My fondest
memories are camp memories," she says.
"Even now, all I want is bug juice."
Kamerman, the daughter of Anna
and the late Leon Kamerman, alsO - Was
active in the UJA's Young Adult
DiviSion. In 1990 and 1992, she
attended missions to Israel, Poland and
Russia,."lifeLchanging trips," she says.
Unfortunately, she can't commit to
organizations in her film life. There's
just no time. Instead, she . surrOtinds
herself with design books and maga-
zines, and power tools for her set-
