YOU HAVE A STORY TO TELL

of Huntington Woods. "I've now found
painting very new, interesting and fulfill-
ing. It gives me a place for self-expres-
sion.
"My family enjoys seeing my work,
and they are uniformly amazed at the
way my still lifes have turned out," she
says. "I even have a friend who wants to
buy a painting, but I'll probably give it
to her."
Shirley Siefman, who has taken art
classes at the Birmingham Bloomfield
Art Center and through the Livonia
schools, says she prefers the group set-
ting to working alone. She alternately
uses oils and watercolors, mostly doing
still-life pieces that lean toward the
abstract.
"I've actually been drawing since I
was 5, but I've never had a lot of time to
devote to it," says Siefman of Bloomfield
Hills. "When I work with other people,
I become inspired. I'm looking forward
to the exhibit because I'm interested to
see what other people are going to
think."
Although Henrietta Weingarden's
parents had discouraged her from paint-
ing when she was in her teens, she never
lost her artistic spark. She was able to
rekindle it after her children were
grown.
"I started classes at the Y," recalls
Weingarden, 83, of Southfield. She
enjoys using oils and watercolors to cap-
ture people and animals as well as deco-
rate the masks she learned to sculpt
through classes at the Center for
Creative Studies in Detroit.
"I love people and the animation I
see on their faces, and that does things
inside of me. I show them light and airy
because I don't want any of my work to
be depressing," Weingarden says.
Unlike her parents, she encouraged
her child, Norman Weingarden, into
artistic pursuits. Now her son has built a
career of making stained-glass windows
in Georgia.
"Because of my age, I don't have
many long-time friends left,"
Weingarden says. "I've made new friends
in class, and there's a good, relaxed feel-
ing when I'm with them." ❑ •

It is a unique and powerful drama that belongs to you,
your children, your grandchildren and generations to come.
Your words, your voice, your smile, make a
family history a lasting tribute to your past.
Photographs fade and memories cloud, but a visual history endures.
