rbara Smith

didate Barbara Smith is the first to

a founder and partner in Medical
Malpractice Mediators Inc., which
mediated cases before going to court.
As a solo practitioner, she worked on a
large number of patient,advocate
cases, including the writing of living
wills and related issues.
Earlier, "while I was [still] having
babies," Smith worked part-time in
the law offices of Marilyn Kelly and
Associates and Samuel Bernstein.
As a part-time magistrate, Smith is
the only candidate with experience in
issuing real-world judgments. These
include traffic cases, misdemeanors
and small-claims cases. She also con-
ducts arraignments for district court
misdemeanor and felony cases.
"I have felt a great responsibility
not to just sit there in the court-
house," Smith said. "It is critical to be
very tough, especially on people who
put others in danger."
In addition to serving as magistrate,
Smith lectures to senior citizen groups
about living wills, medical self-determi-
nation and other issues. She began the
Senior Citizens/Elementary School Pen
Pal Program and Way To Go!, a pro-:
gram of positive reinforcement for teens
with clean driving records. She hopes to
expand that program to includeincen-
tives against alcohol and drug use.
"At the end, what is more impor-
tant than our children?" she said.
Listed among Smith's supporters are
Oakland County Prosecutor David
Gorcyca, State Rep. Gilda Jacobs (D-
Huntington Woods), Democratic
State Treasurer Roger Winkelman,
Albert Holtz of the Democratic State
Central Committee and the Michigan
Police Legislative Coalition. Heading
