EXPERIENCE MATTERS
FOR
Tamar's
Sukkah by Ellie
Gellman, with
illustrations by
Shauna Mooney
Kawasaki (Kar-Ben
Copies Inc.;
$4.95).
This is a nice, happy
little board book about
building a sukka and
friendship. It's just 10
pages, perfect for younger children
who can't sit too long.
Tamar has built a sukka. "Its
walls reached the sky and
the leafy branches on the
roof smelled delicious. But
something was missing."
It will take you all of
one minute to figure
out what's missing,
as Tamar makes
decorations and
puts a cloth on
the table and
sets out food.
(Just in case
you didn't
get it — at
the end, all of
Tamar's friends arrive.)
Sukkot is only a few months
away. This would be a fun present if
you would like to send something holi-
day-related to friends or family.
Anne Frank: A Hidden Life by
Miriam Pressler (Dutton -Press;
$15.99).
Miriam Pressler, who lives in Munich,
wrote A Hidden Life in 1992, and it
was published in Germany. Only
now !s it available in English.
Chances are if you've seen the play
or movie about Anne Frank, you'll
want to purchase the book for a
younger reader. Consider this review
a warning.
Ever since Anne died, and her diary
was discovered and published, there
has been something of an obsession
with the girl who really believed that
people are basically good at heart.
When five more
pages from the
diary, removed
by her father,
Otto, were dis-
covered in
1998, it
made nation-
al news. You
can find
,
many collec-
tions of Frank family
photos, biographies or even fiction-
alized works that focus on Anne. It
seems like we just can't get enough
of her.
And now along comes Anne
Frank: A Hidden Life,
which is based
on Anne's
diaries,
including the
five missing _
pages, and "from
her [the author's]
own work editing
the definitive edition
of the Diary."
Pressler% book is, at
times, very intriguing,
offering new perspectives
on Anne's character, as
well as those of the other
attic residents. Despite what
Anne wrote, the real Peter van
Pels, for example, was "a good-look-
ing, strongly built boy with thick dark
hair ... He was as quiet and with-
drawn as Margot, very introspective,
and he always kept in the back-
ground."
Other times, the book will give you
information you likely already know if
you're at all familiar with the diary.
Or, you may just get weary with the
author's personal assessment of behav-
ior; do we really care that she finds
"Margot's diffidence and withdrawal
depressing"?
If you're obsessed with Anne, of
course, you'll buy this book. But be
advised that it includes the author%
observations on such sensitive topics
as Anne and sex, which makes it
appropriate reading only for older
readers.
