apparently by religious extremists.
The governing coalition is in sham-
bles just as it faces one of the most
significant decisions in Israeli histo-
ry.
The terrible words "civil war" are
on peoples' lips and there is much
discouragement even as Israel is
poised to start a wonderful new era.
While Israel looks magnificent and
the people are as warm and welcom-
ing as ever, the tensions inherent in
our young democracy are alarming.
I wonder whether the parshiyot
spoke to just such a fragile state of
affairs. Perhaps their lofty vision of
justice was possible only while
dreaming in the desert before the
harsh realities of statehood set in.
But modern Israelis need to
remind themselves of the powerful
ideals therein for a new Jewish soci-
ety: justice, equity, and indepen-
dence. Religious Jews would add
love and reverence for God, the
Torah and our fellow Jews.
Without such core values, Israeli
society will remain riven to the core.
With them we can accomplish every
good deed that our Torah asks of us.
By dedicating ourselves to the cre-
ation of a just and good society, we
can bequeath to our children an
Israel which is both rich in history
and promising in its future, where
God's holy presence is welcomed
and strengthened in our homeland
of Israel. May Jews around the world
pray for the peace of Jerusalem as we
prepare to celebrate Shabbat in our
homes and synagogues. 0

Does Judaism belong in the
realm of public policy or
should it be focused on the pri-
vate domain? Does your answer
differ for Israel and the diaspo-
ra? How and why?
The Kotel (Western Wall) is
both a uniting and a polarizing
symbol. Should it be complete-
ly open and unregulated, or be
maintained as an Orthodox
synagogue? Is it possible for a
society founded on nationalism
rather than religious morality
to be a "light unto the
nations?"
