the typical 10-year-old
might for his birthday,
Jordan Charlupski of
Orchard Lake this year asked his
friends and family to make donations
in his honor to Yad
Ezra, the Oak Park-
based kosher food
pantry.

of Metropolitan
Detroit, Jordan has
learned a great deal
about tzedaka and

others on his spe-
cial day, June 22. When his parents
Elyn and Larry presented him with the
option of performing this mitzvah, he
said he was afraid and excited because
he didn't know anything about donat-
ing to a food bank. On his birthday
party invitation, it specifically said,
please do not bring gifts, but please
make donations to Yad Ezra in Jordan's
honor.
When he made his suggestion for
people to donate checks to Yad Ezra,
his friends and their parents. grilled
him on whether this was his own deci-
sion. They wondered why a 10-year-
old boy would want to do this, instead
of getting presents. Jordan explained
that though it was his mother's idea,
he also knows how important it is to
help others in need.
He also was excited about seeking
the donations because his brother
Corey performed a similar mitzvah
three years ago for his own 10th birth-
day. Corey had people plant trees in
Israel; now he has certificates for them
framed in his room.

Jordan has never visited Yad Ezra,
but he runs to his mailbox daily in
search of the certificates sent from Yad
Ezra with his name on them. He is
anxious to make his first trip to the
food pantry, to see in person the cause
his birthday donations are helping. ❑
