Offen Eavns
Spirit Award

The Oakland Century Lodge will
present its 28th annual Spirit of
B'nai B'rith Award at a dinner 6:30

Aug. 24, at Adat
Shalom
Synagogue.
The honoree
is Sam Offen of
West
Bloomfield, who
has been active
in the lodge as a

for
15 years.
Sam Offen
Offen has been
a B'nai B'rith
member since 1951 and belongs to

speaks frequently at the Holocaust
Memorial Center in West Bloomfield
and to many high schools and civic
organizations. He serves on the board
of the Hillel at Central Michigan
University in Mt. Pleasant.
The program also will include the
awarding of a college scholarship. It
will go to a student whose academic

Machon Marks
Tisha B'Av

Tisha b'Av, the ninth day of the
Hebrew month Av, should be a day
not only of mourning, but to energize
the Jewish people. That's why the
Chofetz Chaim Heritage Foundation
of New York has instituted its Ninth
of Av event, a video presentation with
speaker Rabbi Paysach Krohn, which
seeks to attack causes of exile, prohib-
ited speech and senseless hatred.
The video, Who Will Put Out the
Fire? will involve Jewish communi-
ties worldwide. The English-lan-
guage video will be presented 6:45
p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, at Machon
L'Torah in Oak Park. Suggested
donation is $8 for adults; $6 for stu-
dents. For information, call
(248)967-0888.
