between folk and classical, this is a
gem, a prime example of how to keep
a tradition alive without performing
musical taxidermy. •

Holocaust On Film

Steven Spielberg is one of several
prominent American and European
filmmakers launching film projects on
the Holocaust.
The creator of Schindler's List has
lined up four top Eastern European
directors for a series of one-hour doc-
umentaries, based on the testimonies
of Holocaust survivors, according to
the entertainment trade newspaper
Variety.
Vojtech Jasny is due to start film-
ing the Czech documentary this
month and Andrzej Wajda has been
signed for the Polish segment. The
two other documentaries are slated
to be filmed by Russian and
Hungarian directors.
In another European-based pro-
ject, director Roman Polanski plans
to start shooting early next year on
The Pianist, based on Polish author
Wladyslaw Szpilman's best-selling
memoir of survival in the Warsaw
Ghetto.
The project marks the first time
that Polanski, who survived the
Krakow Ghetto as a child, will direct a

Classic Comedy

In comedy, timing is everything.
Take for example, the just-released
eight-volume The Woody Allen
Collection from MGM Home Video,
which is currently available in VHS
($100) and DVD ($135).
Until recently, this was just a very
cool collection of very funny movies.
Then the American Film Institute
announced the "100 Funniest Movies"
of all time. Of the five that belong to
Allen, four are contained in this set.
Now that's good timing.
The four tides are Annie Hall,
Manhattan, Bananas and Sleepers.
The balance of the collection con-
sists of Everything You Always Wanted
to Know About Sex But Were Afraid to
Ask, Interiors, Love and Death and
Stardust Memories.
With the exception of Annie Hall,
each of these is being made available
on DVD for the first time. The titles
are available individually, $15 for
VHS and $20 for DVD.
