in relation to a series of environmental

With a grant from a Jewish family
foundation, he started Hazon as'a way
of reconnecting disaffected Jews to their
Jewishness through raising money for
innovative projects. He said he hopes
money will start to flow in from tradi-
tional Jewish sources so that Hazon can
support projects like The Katmandu, in
which Jews would work with locals and
Jewish travelers in Nepal to assist in
environmental cleanup. Another of its
causes is the Yeshiva Nutrition Project,
in which Hazon would pay a nutrition-
ist to help yeshivot improve their often-
unhealthy menus.

If young Jews are finding their spiritu-
al side in non-sectarian causes like
nature, so are many Jewish family
foundations. At its annual conference
in Phoenix last April, provocatively
entitled "Saving the Whales: Is it a
Jewish Cause?" the Jewish Flinders
Network prompted some sharp debate
on whether Jewish foundations and
philanthropists should support non-
Jewish causes like the environment.
"One of the reasons we made that
our topic is that we found that
depending on who you ask, you get a
different response," said JFN

OEJEs affiliate in Seattle, which she
unded three years ago with her hus-
nd, Mark, and her affiliation with
r local federation, of which she
rues as an executive board member.
There's a synergy, in fact, between
e federation and the Northwest
wish Environmental Project, she
id. "Anything that brings more
areness to the Jewish community
e federation likes, and the fact we're
ringing new voices and faces, they
ve it."
NWJEP has run joint programs
ith the Seattle federation that focus
n Jewish teachings on the environ-
ent, and the federation has spon-
ored NWJEP events.
With another office in Portland,
re., the organization has attracted
undreds of unaffiliated Jews to its
eders for Tu b'Shevat. Dozens also
ave attended its two "Shabbat in the
oods" weekend retreats in the 1.
arcade Mountains. The Sabbath is
bserved and the food is kosher.
NWJEP has a strong activist com-
ponent. It has led park and urban
restoration projects in Seattle with
high school students, tree plantings
with grade school students and orga-
nized formal trainings of Jewish edu-
cators. NWJEP boasts a mailing list of
3,000-plus members.
"People who come to our events,
the majority, are not part of the main-
stream," Bloome said. "In fact, it's a
way to attract new people to the
mainstream. The one thing the orga-
nized Jewish community needs is new
blood. Where are they going to get
them? They have to find out what
they're passionate about."
Bloome believes young Jews are
drawn to environmentalism because
it's a way they can connect with tradi-
tion. Echoing Dr. Sarna's contention,
she said, "So many of us have moved
away from Judaism. Israel just doesn't
have the same meaning to my genera-
tion and younger, so what is it that's
going to bring them in?"
Members of NWJEP gathered in
Gas Works Park in Seattle the day
after Tu b'Shevat last month to send
off the Hazon cyclists, who will com-
plete their 3,600-mile journey next
month in Washington, D.C.
In lace June, Savage and his fellow
riders, including an Oregonian from
NWJEP, spent an evening with mem-
bers of the Jewish community in
Helena, Mont. They discussed a por-
tion of the Talmud that wrestles with
the question of moving stones from a
private to a public domain.
