INSIDE: food health A Championship Plus Entourage 96 Birthday Bash For Max Fisher 98 the scene sports travel LESLIE ZACK Student Intern Journal's The media have been seeking this young writer's opinions for four years. S cots Warheit has been in the media's eye a quarter of his life, and he's only 16. The Farmington Hills teenager has always been an avid sports fan and fre- quent caller to WDFN sports radio's Great American Sports Trivia Show. Warheit was heard by the host and, at age 12, was flown to St. Louis with his family to co-host a Show. Then the editor of Detroit Sports Confidential, a local sports magazine, acknowledged his interest. Warheit agreed to write monthly sports articles for the magazine. Warheit worked at Detroit Sports Confidential for three years and remembers his first day and article perfectly. "I introduced myself in the article, and explained my interest in interviewing local and national sports personalities. Although it was the smallest publication I have written for, I was able to interview the most people," he said. His favorite interviewee was former Detroit Tigers manager Sparky Anderson. "He was one of the nicest people I've ever had a chance to inter- view," said Warheit. Since then, he has written for a number of pub- lications, including the Jewish News'AppleTree sec- tion. His favorite job, writing for Michigan Live, an Internet paper, only lasted a year because of compa- ny restructuring. Warheit has written for the Oakland Press and Detroit News for four years. He said he found that Ifiternet and print publi- cations have positive and negative aspects. With . newspapers, Warheit has the freedom to choose his article subjects. But he loved Michigan Live because the timely articles he wrote were posted on the Web immediately. His articles appear in the Oakland Press and Detroit News twice a month, so it's more difficult for him to find- hot topics in the sports world that will remain relevant for weeks. Warheit is pleased to see people responding to his articles: "I love that people write good and bad things in response to my articles; I just want them to think about what I'm writing." Warheit's role model is Cantor Stephen Dubov of Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Township, who inspired him while singing the national anthem at a Detioit Lions game. A senior next fall at North Farmington High School, Warheit will be working on the yearbook staff and applying to colleges, including the University of Michigan, Michigan State and Northwestern. He loves writing, but is unsure what he wants to do careerwise. "I could see doing this for the rest of my life," he says, but wants to explore other fields, such as law and broadcasting. ❑ 7/21 2000
