Christianity Issue

JN: One of the things that Jewish vot-
ers recall is that at one point you said
you've got to be a Christian to go to
heaven.
BUSH: I never said that. The story
came out, I was asked about the New
Testament, and I said that's my view;
and I told the story about Billy
Graham admonishing my mother and
me to never play God. You know,
"Who are you?" And I tell people all
the time one of the interesting New
Testament verses says, "I'm not going
to be trying to take a speck out of
your eye when I've got a log in my
own." Who am I to judge you?
One of the tenets of Christianity is
that we seek redemption because we are
sinners. So that was a misrepresented
statement. That's the problem with dis-
cussing religion and politics. I don't
mind telling people where I come
from. But I can understand a Jewish
person, if in fact I'd said that or implied
that in any way, I can understand a citi-
zen saying "who does he think he is?" I
wouldn't vote for me either if I thought
that I was going to condemn you.
But all I know to do is to explain
to people where my heart is, live my
life according to the religious point of
view, and remind people that church
and state need to be separate.
JN: How much importance do you
think making the right choice of a
vice presidential candidate makes in
terms of your being elected?
BUSH: I think that's a fascinating
question. I don't want to diminish the
selection, but people will ultimately
decide whether George W. Bush has got
the judgement and decisionmaking
capability and heart to be president; and
what the vice presidential process can do
is show people how I make decisions. It
explains my judgement. It explains as
much about me as the person I pick.
JN: Throughout the campaign, you
have had to fight the perception that
you're not ready for this job.
BUSH: I'm not the least bit wor-
ried about my ability to do the job.
I've been a leader. I'm the only one in
the race who's been a leader. It should
be of interest to people that three of
the last four presidents have been gov-
ernors, because governors lead. ❑
