Rabbi Stephen Weiss from Bus
7 and Shaarey Zedek leads
morning prayers at sunrise.

Scott Studenberg, 17, West
Bloomfield, Temple Israeli Bus
1, holds the Israeli flag after
climbing the snakepath.

By the middle -of the hike, the
entire mission was working as a team,
encouraging each other, helping each
other and motivating each other on
the journey to the top.
A cheer went up as we neared the
top of the mountain. The entire mis-
sion accomplished their goals and
reached the peak in time to witness
the incredible sunrise, say the
Shehechiyanu prayer and hear the
blowing of the shofar.
What has the Masada climb to do
with the mission as a whole? Each bus
works together as a team to support
the others if a member is sick or upset;
we help each other on rigorous hikes
or hard climbs. The same is true of
Masada: Every member of the Teen
Mission could count on the others for
encouragement, support and the occa-
sional push in the right direction.
Although we work together on this
mission, each participant must give
his/her all to crawl through unexcavat-
ed caves, camp out in the desert or
just bear the heat. Likewise, no partic-
ipant could have made it up Masada
without pushing himself/herself and

testing his/her limits. On Masada,
everyone accomplished the same goal
by reaching the top to see the sun rise.
On this trip, every day brings a new
accomplishment. Whether one's goal is
to see the Kotel (Western Wall of the
Temple), ride a camel or climb a
1,200-foot mountain, we all accom-
plish goals with each new day.
I have been on the Teen Mission
for a few weeks, yet I have already
worked with others on my bus,
pushed my limits and accomplished
goals I never thought I could reach.
Not only did I do these things while
climbing beautiful Mount Masada,
but I do them ever day of the mission.
I will continue to work with others,
pushing myself and accomplishing
goals every single day until I leave
Israel. ❑
