Forces Of Disagreement

JONATHAN
FRIENDLY

National Editor

n our age
b of instant
information, all the
world can share in its
most important moments as
they happen. But watching
something happen does not
necessarily mean understand-
ing the event and the forces

that shaped it.
So it is with this week's
summit meeting at Camp

David. By the time this paper is in your hands,
the parties may have struck a historic deal for
peace in the Mideast — or they haven't. As of
Wednesday afternoon, when we go to press, the
outcome was still uncertain. (For the latest
information on the summit meeting, please visit
vvvvw.detroitjewishnews.com .)

To help make sense of the forces that are
working against a settlement, our cover story,
beginning on page 6, takes a look at the players
and the issues most crucial to the negotiations.
It also lets you hear from a number of former
Detroiters now living in Israel and coming to
understand the conflict at first hand.
In addition, an editorial (on page 31) ana-
lyzes how this summit took many in the United
States by surprise and discusses the problems of
educating different constituencies to accept a set
of what will be agonizingly difficult sacrifices.
