I figure African Americans are my audience and they might use me as a role model." Mann, whose grandfather was a rabbi, feels that spirituality is part of his life although he doesn't practice Jewish ritual. Away from New York since 1989, he and his wife luxuriate in rural pleasures. "My day is filled at my tempo without the city energy," says the jazz flutist, who is organizing three music festivals for August, two in Colorado and one in Santa Fe. "There is so much to do that we never have enough time to watch television, which we use as a moni- tor when we rent movies. "One thing about doing 30 con- certs a year is that I look forward to every job. When I was working too much, they got to be a chore, and concerts should always be wonderful. "If the sound on stage is good, then it doesn't matter where the con- cert is. I've worked with [Jazzfest Artistic Director] Alexander Zonjic, and I know he's a perfectionist, so the sound in Birmingham should be perfect." ❑ Herbie Mann performs 5:30-6:45 p.m. Saturday, July 22, in Birmingham's Shain Park. 27060 EVERGREEN -(AT 11 MILE & EVERGREEN) LATH RUP LANDING LATH RUP VILLAGE (248) 559-9099 COUPON GOOD AT BOTH LOCATIONS 150% OFF1 Lunch or Dinner With purchase of a second lunch or dinner entree of equal or greater value • Dine In Only • 1 Coupon Per Couple I • Not Valid With other Offers L • Expires 12/31/2000 I Catering For All Occasions 7 /14 2000 89
