But Magneto knows better. Born Erik Magnus Lehnsherr, Magneto was' a child in Auschwitz. He watched men, who extolled the belief in a master race, butcher his parents and sister. In their eyes, his family was less than human. What kept him alive was his love for a woman he met in the camps. After they were liberated, they returned to their native land and mar- ried. But soon after having their first child, Lehnsherr's mutation manifest- ed itself It frightened the villagers, and his wife, who ran away in terror. Distraught, Lehnsherr started a new life in the new nation of Israel. Magneto confided these events to Xavier and vowed he would never allow his people, mutants, to be vic- timized again. Magneto feels his friend's dream is naive. He believes humans will always fear what is differ- ent and there can never be peace. The only course of action, he believes, is to lead mutants to claim their birthright. Mutants are the next step in evolution; humans are the genetic failures, not mutants. There will be a race war and mutants must win. In Israel, both men grew increasing- ly alarmed by the persecution of mutants and each followed his own particular path of ideology. Xavier formed the X-Men to oppose mutants, such as Magneto, who use their powers to harm humanity. Likewise, Magneto formed the Brotherhood to counter human aggression with equal force. Through the years all sides continue their struggle, just as we do in real life. For nearly 40 years now, the populari- ty of the comic books that portray these struggles of overcoming racism and bigotry is a testament to their readers, who also dream of a world of tolerance, equality and freedom.
