With fellow collaborators, Lee made history by creating many of Marvel's
most popular and widely recognized characters: Spider-Man, the Fantastic
Four, the Incredible Hulk and Iron Man, to name a few.
Lee's creations forever changed comic books. Before Lee, superheroes
were one-dimensional, unchanging, unfailing, unemotional. Though drawn
in color, the stories were very black and White, the good guy beating the bad
guy and saving the damsel in distress. There were flashy costumes and larg-

interesting stories and more involved plots. Relationships and story lines
became so intricate, they put soap opera writers to shame.
Lee also endeared himself to hiS fans by creating the "Bullpen Bulletin."
In each issue he talked to readers in a casual one-on-one style, answering
fan-mail questions and discussing future projects, ending with his trademark
salutation, "Excelsior!"
Born Stanley Martin Lieber in New York City in 1922, Lee, who is
Jewish, joined Marvel (then called Timely Publications) at age 16. A year
later he became its editor. After a three-year service in the Army Signal
Corps during World War II, Lee returned to Marvel, adding head art direc-
