easily apparent that I could retire
from a financial standpoint, but I
wasn't ready psychologically ... not at
age 61.
Looking back, I'm confident I
made the right decision. You really
have to be mentally ready to take a
big step like retirement. Also, Ford's
sales and profits soared during those
four years, and the resulting unusually
high executive bonuses added to the
retirement portfolio.
A few years before actual retirement,
my wife and I took a Ford-sponsored
retirement planning class for several
weeks to "get ready." Ford continued to
offer the special retirement packages —
and, at age 65, the package was just too
good to turn down. It included two dif-
ferent types of pensions, a one-time free
car, continued inexpensive leasing of
another car, plus leftover stock options
and other perks.
Just before and after retirement —
April 1, 1998 — I attended a variety
of retirement seminars around town,
offered by various companies through
newspaper advertising and mail, such
as Fidelity, which handles the Ford
stock investment and 401(k) pro-
grams; Merrill Lynch, where I have
diversified investments; Charles
Schwab, Salomon Smith Barney and
independent lawyers and accountants.
I strongly recommend doing this
because you usually learn even a little
something at each seminar.
I also paid another visit to Milton
Silverman, a Southfield attorney who
specializes in estate planning, and he
revised certain aspects of my will and
estate to go along with the retirement
process.
Another piece of advice is to make
sure you cover all of the financial
bases, not just the cash income.
I had no fears or concerns about
retiring. For a while, I missed going to
the office and joking with my col-
leagues, tangling with the press, and
doing the other things that made
working for the third-largest corpora-
tion in the world a fun job.
But I keep in touch with everybody
and see them on various occasions.
Some Ford people call me seeking my
advice; some news media people call me
seeking my opinion. And I certainly
don't miss riding the Lodge and -
Southfield freeways at peak traffic hours
or waking up at 4 or 5 a.m. to catch
planes or attend meetings.
• The second-best thing that has
happened to me — the first is being
able to spend more time with Natalie,
