• Miriam's presence was the final
characteristic of her life. She was
reliable and trusted. When she died,
she was missed. When she died, it
was noticeable. Something in the
community's life was different and
the people were upset, "thirsty" for
her voice and her music and her
nourishment.
"This is the Torah: for a human
being dies..." (Numbers 19:14).
Later in the same chapter, Aaron
dies as well. Aaron, the high priest,
the peace maker and peace lover
who represents the cloud of glory,
joins Miriam in death and the peo-
ple are numb.
But Aaron (with Moses' help) had
prepared for his death, training his
sons and sharing the priesthood's
responsibilities and blessings with
them. His son, Eleazar, accompanies
him and Moses to the top of Mt.
Hor.
As one by one their leaders are
taken from them, the Israelites
develop a response for life: mourn-
ing for 30 days, distinguishing
between pure and impure and
affirming the importance of memo-
ry.
The stories which we tell from
generation to generation will be our
human answer to the chuka of
human mortality. Every time we sing
Miriam's words, every time we hear
Aaron's priestly benediction, we
remind ourselves of their lives.

What are the moments in life
which "make us want to
sing"? How should people .
overcome a natural hesitation
to be exuberant or enthusias-
tic in the presence of others?
What would you have said to
the Israelites, if you were
Moses or Aaron, when they
complained about lack of
water while you were in
mourning? If you could have
one phrase attached to your.
name as a legacy forever (like
Moses, our teacher, or
Miriam, the prophetess, or
Aaron, the peacemaker) what
would it be?
