01111111:1111 Larry Jackier follows in his late father's footsteps by winning the Technions highest honor. Larry Jackier early 15 years to the day that his father earned the highest honor bestowed by the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Larry Jackier duplicated the feat, accepting an hon- orary fellowship on June 4. It marked the first time a father and son have each won the honorary fellowship. .The late Joseph Jackier received the honor on June 13, 1985, in recognition of his work on behalf of the Technion, his promotion of science and technology in Israel, and his service to the Jewish community. His three sons, Larry, Marty and Rob, weren't able to accompany their mother Edythe to the 1985 award cere- N Assistance with bathing, dressing, personal hygiene, medication management and laundry. mony. But on their behalf, Larry wrote: "Dear Dad, as you accept this honor from the Technion, you should take equal pleasure in the knowledge that, while you were devoting significant por- tions of your life in service to numerous Jewish causes, you were, at the same time, able to imbue in your children your joy in being Jewish and your love of the Jewish people." National president of the American Society for Technion, whose Detroit offices are in Farmington Hills, Larry earned the honorary fellowship for his dedication to the Technion, his leader- ship of ATS and his commitment to Israel. The father-son achievement prompt- ed Larry to challenge his daughter Ariana, in his accep- tance speech, to represent the third generation of Jackiers as an honorary fellowship win- ner. Larry became acquainted with the Technion on one of the first of his 60 visits to Israel. He said he "saw that the Technion's cutting-edge research benefits not only Israel, whose economic future rests on high technology, but so many other people in the world, who are aided by the university's research and devel- opment in water. medi- cine, genetics and d engineering." ATS Executive Vice President Mel Bloom said, "It is very fitting that Larry should receive the same award given to his father." Bloom described each as a great Jewish leader. "It has been a privi- lege to have worked so closely not only with them, but with Edythe [Jackier] as well." Added Morrie Rochlin, president of ATS's Detroit chapter: "We have been blessed here in Detroit to have such a devoted family, like the Jackiers. Joe and Edythe were instrumental in the early development of our chapter and now Larry continues that responsibility along 5, with Edythe.
