`When we arrived on Shabbos, we found our shul in ruins.' 0 n June 2, a fire of unknown origin destroyed the Aish HaTorah Center in Kiev, Ukraine. Cherished pieces of Jewish life — Torah scrolls, a 1,000-volume library and Judaica treasures — could not be saved. Decimated by the Holocaust, suffering through decades of anti-Semitism, economic and political upheaval — the Jewish community of Kiev once again was sifting through ashes. But within the ashes are seeds of hope. The center's 500 members have vowed that their center of Jewish life will rise again. Their brothers and sisters in Detroit have made a vow, as well. For more than a century, our organized Jewish community has helped our extended family throughout the world in times of trouble. Please join in this effort on behalf of the Jewish community of Kiev.
