The affinity groups will reach women
that wish to come together over shared
interests.
Currently, the Michigan region boasts
nine chapters. Some have members in
their 30s, another has women in their
80s. Some members are homemakers;
others work outside the home.

Empowering People

Women's American ORT is the largest
arm of the World ORT Union, a 120-
year-old global, non-profit institution
that is one of the largest non-govern-
mental education and training organiza-
tions in the world. ORT technology
training facilities are in 56 countries;
they educate 260,000 students annually.
"I think it is incredible that ORT is
able to be viable all over the world,"
Rossman said. "ORT helps to teach self-
sufficiency in this modern age of tech-
nology; within a Jewish context." ORT
helps to empower people and has an
impact on their lives, she said, adding
that it helps many Jews in the former
Soviet Union and Eastern Europe to
"learn for the first time what it means to
be a Jew."
ORT is two organizations in one: an
agency that empowers people worldwide
through its mission and one that's grass-
roots based, where women spend time
together in support of the organization.
Locally, ORT raises money through
gift-wrapping in malls, and planning
major events in the fall, winter and
spring. "Vision 2000: A Celebration,"
held in May, honored 19 active
women from the Detroit area while
raising $200,000.
In addition to helping people world-
wide develop their skills, ORT helps its
members' own skill development. One
of them is Harriet Jacobson of West
Bloomfield, an honoree at Vision 2000.
Jacobson, a 29-year ORT member from
Glenwood Chapter, has served as
regional president and assisted with capi-
tal fund-raising.
"I was very shy," Jacobson recilled,
[but] "my involvement with ORT
taught me to have confidence and to
help earn money for a very important
organization. My heart is with ORT."
