KAREL BASS, 84, former Detroiter
of Laguna Woods, Calif., died June 25.
He was founder and chairman of KBC
Tools and Machinery, a North
American catalogue company, which he
started in a storefront on Eight Mile
Road in Detroit.
Mr. Bass was born in Prague,
Czechoslovakia, and in his formative
years mastered eight languages. In 1940,
he was imprisoned by the Germans and
then released and expelled from the
country. He went to Palestine and stud-
ied at the Technion.
During the War for Independence,
he was made a war industry inspector,
responsible for assembling shells with
which Jerusalem was defended. He later
opened a drop-forge factory and was
responsible for introducing the Israeli
tool industry to the United States.
At age 61, Mr. Bass received his first
formal degree with high honors from
Wayne State University He was a long-
time member of the Michigan Oriental
Arts Society and lectured often on
Oriental art. He was a member of the
Sholem Aleicheni Institute and the
Birmingham Temple.
After moving to California in 1998,
he opened a new branch of KBC to be
able to still go to the office.
Mr. Bass is survived by his wife of 40
years, Sheila; daughters Daniella Peleg of
West Bloomfield, Paula Bass of Toronto,
Canada; son, Ariel Bass of Houston,
Texas.
A memorial service Will take place 3
p.m. Sunday, July 9, at the Birmingham
Temple.

GREGORY LOUIS BOLAK, 49, of

Huntington Woods, died June 25. For
the past year, Mr. Bolak was the princi-
pal at Grant Elementary in Ferndale and
previously the principal at Jefferson
Elementary. He was a member of the
Michigan Association of Elementary
and Middle School Principals and other
professional education organizations,
was an avid fly fisherman, a member of
the Trout Unlimited Clinton Valley
Chapter, member of Anglers of the Au
Sable and he published a book and
numerous articles on fishing.
Mr. Bolak is survived by his wife, Dr.
Karen Bolak; son, Theodore Gregory
Bolak; sister and brother-in-law, Beverly
and Butch Wisner; father-in-law and
mother-in-law, Lloyd and Frances
Finsilver; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-
law, Stanley, Shari, Ronald and Trish
Finsilver. He was the loving son of the
late Louis and the late Irene Bolak.

Boca Raton, Fla., formerly of Detroit,
died June 28.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy
Brightman; sons and daughters-in-law,
Gary and Mary Brightman of Warren,
Jeffrey and Jean Brightman of Arizona;
daughter and son-in-law, Patty and Pau
Rhoden of Florida; sister-in-law and
brother-in-law, Fay and Norman
Tarockoff of Southfield; grandchildren,
Mark Brightman, Michael Brightman,
Kristy Brightman, Cody Rhoden, Justin
Rhoden, Jessica Strauss, Josh Brightman
great-grandchild, Alexis. Contributions
may be made to Hospice by the Sea or
charity of one's choice. Interment at
Hebrew Memorial Park. Arrangements

ROSE HALPRIN, 81, of West

Bloomfield, died June 29. She was a
member of Northwest Child Rescue.
Mrs. Halprin is survived by her sons
and daughter-in-law, Dr. Stanley and
Shirley Halprin of West Bloomfield,
Dennis Halprin of Dallas; daughters,
Judith Halprin of West Bloomfield,
Janice Goodman of Waterford; daugh-
ter-in-law, Bonnie Cermak of Canton;
grandchildren, Richard and Mary Beth
Halprin, Brian Halprin, Daniel Halprin,
Jason and Becky Halprin, Loren
Halprin, Andrew Halprin and Stephanie
and David Howard; great-grandchil-
dren, Hailee, Rachel and Melissa
Halprin; sister, Florence Simon of
California; sisters-in-law and brother-in-
law, Sarah Cranis and Herman and Rose
Halprin. She was the beloved wife of the
late Henry Halprin; the loving mother
of the late Martin Benson Halprin; dear
sister of the late William Ginsberg and
the late Betty Guss.
