he Internet is a new medi-
um, but it also is providing
the means to preserve and
disseminate material from
days gone by.
Case in point: the new
Hebrewbooks Web site, which is run
by the Society for the Preservation of
Hebrew Books.
This site is very much a work in
progress — more promise than reality.
But the promise is intriguing, and the
material on hand definitely worth a
visit.
The idea is simple: the site provides
glimpses of old seforim, [Hebrew for
books] most dating from the early
years of the 20th century.
The authors "have long since
passed away and in many instances so
has their holy work," the site authors
tell us.
The site seems aimed at rabbis

seeking new material to use with their
congregations, but the range of topics
when the site is completed should be
of interest to Jewish cybernauts of all
types.
The limited offerings include a
rabbinical analysis of the dilemma
faced by Jewish women who sur-
vived the Titanic disaster while their
men perished, and an early discus-
sion of whether Coca-Cola is
kosher.
The site organizers seem to have
Titanic on the brain; there's also a
rabbinical eulogy for Isidor Straus, the
department store magnate who went
down with the ship.
Coming up soon are collections of
sermons from famous rabbis of the
past. The Web masters are actively
soliciting input from visitors about
new material, as well.

their considerable promise. ❑
